The selected works are from an ongoing photography project about Echo Lake, California. In the early twentieth century, the United States Department of Agriculture began issuing permits for the so-called “Cabin in the Woods” program. The program encouraged citizens to lease public land and build cabins to “enjoy your public lands.” There are 140 cabins around Echo Lake (actually two lakes, Upper and Lower Echo Lake). My connection to the lake stems from my maternal grandparents who bought a one room cabin in 1934. Our family has been spending summers there ever since. The photographic project began a few years ago, and kicked into full gear in 2020, my sabbatical year. My goal is to document the rustic cabins, interiors and exteriors, as well as the landscape and people of Echo Lake. I chose three interiors for this exhibition.
